heidi is my 8-year-old black lab. she has always been healthy but lately she has developed several small lumps under her skin. they are hard and about the size of a quarter. do you have any information as to what they may be? we appreciate any advice you may have. thank you.

I was watching something on cable that sounded similar to the dog with small lumps under the skin and they said the bumps could be malignant and need to be checked by a vet. I don't have a dog so I wasn't paying close attention but I hope that helps.

My husband and I bought a beautiful yellow lab puppy from a breeder in Newport, VT. He was the last one of the litter left and a complete gem. He was 7 weeks old when we brought him home. We live in Thetford, Vt, in a lovely area and have no children-except the puppy-whom we named Reilly.
This past Saturday Reilly died of a bacterial infection and complications due to undetermined causes. He became sick suddenly, throwing up, fever and seizure as soon as we hit the vets office all within several hours. They took blood tests, shot him with valium, glucose..etc..all to no avail. Dr. P. is an amazing vet and person. Unfortunately, she could not come up with any cause to this situation other than possible liver disease or just plain wiring that wasn't right. It was determined from blood tests to be unrelated to anything that could have possibly been ingested. He died naturally after trying to save his little life for 20 hours.
We buried him atop a mountain with his blanket and little toys. Reilly was the most amazing dog we have ever owned and loved him dearly despite the short life he lived.
I am completely distraught over this situation and have great concern about getting another puppy. Please let me know if this at all sounds familiar to you. Parvo was ruled out as well.
Thank you.
Deb Ritchie

Dear Deb,
I am very sorry for your loss.
I was going with Parvo until the last line of your letter. Unless it was something systemic like your vet suggests, I am wondering if Reilly got bit by something like a spider or tick. If so, Reilly's young age may have been a contributing factor. You might try asking other vets or pet owners in your area if there have been problems with pets getting insect bites. My second guess is intestine blockage due to swallowing something that got stuck.
You sound like a person with alot of love to share. I hope you will find another dog soon, not for your sake but for the dog's. I am partial to pound rescues myself, and sometimes they have puppies.
Sincerely,
Roscoe

Dear Roscoe,
I did not know that dogs could be allergic to fleas. My dog goes absolutely crazy when even one flea gets on her skin. She scratches so vigorously that she loses patches of hair. We have a great vet and she explained about flea allergies and said to use Frontline every month, instead of every three months. Now Ginger is not scratching like a maniac and she is ready to do tricks and go on walks. Everybody is happy to have Ginger back to normal.
Thanks for letting me tell you about my dog,
Jonathan
