| Nikki - Wild Dog of the North (1961)
Nikki and his kind master, Andre Dupas, are traveling via canoe through the Canadian Rockies. When Nikki encounters Neewa, a bear cub that's lost its mother, Andre ties the two animals together, plops them in the canoe, and heads for the rapids. When the two animals become separated from Andre, the unlikely pair must learn to survive in the wilderness. What is initially a relationship of hate and incompatibility transforms into one of compromise and friendship between species. Encounters with timber wolves, lynx, wolverines, and many other wild animals are vividly photographed and give viewers a real sense of life in the wild. Absolutely breathtaking animal and nature photography and the action is plentiful and absorbing.

| The Dog of Flanders (1975, Animated)
Ouida's Flemish classic children's novel of the late 1800s follows the adventures of artist Nello, a young peasant boy separated from his closest companion, wealthy Aloise. Nello only has his beloved grandfather and his faithful dog Patrasche, but his grandfather dies suddenly. Nello must fend for himself. Dog and boy master brave a frightful snowstorm, at the end of which Nello is finally able to view the work of his idol, Reubens. The ending, while grim, switches to the future with a grown Aloise (now a nun), and it's clear Nello's spirit lives through his still-devoted friend. A wonderfully animated film for the viewer who has the maturity to understand its deeply powerful story.
